On Thursday, the 98th Oscar nominations were announced from the Academy Awards studio by actors Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks. The Oscars are meant to pay homage to exceptional filmmaking, acting, producing and writing, among other categories. Although only one winner is picked in each category, a nomination is still seen as a major achievement in Hollywood and broader film circles.
The movie “Sinners” broke a record for its 16 nominations, which included Michael B. Jordan’s nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Jordan joined the likes of Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein”), Teyana Taylor (“One Battle After Another”) and Elle Fanning (“Sentimental Value”) on the list of first-time nominations.
Timothée Chalamet also received a Best Actor nomination for “Marty Supreme,” a film that follows a semi-manic table tennis star on his way to success. This is Chalamet’s second time receiving this nomination. “Marty Supreme” director Josh Safdie received a nomination for Best Director for his work on the film.
Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet” earned her a nomination for best director, placing her as the only woman in the category. Paul Thomas Anderson was also nominated for “One Battle After Another,” which earned 13 nominations in total, placing it three short of “Sinners.”
A new category for Best Casting was introduced this year, featuring a commendable list of films. Overall, this year’s nominations sparked buzz due to the competitive nominations and big-name nods. The Oscars will be hosted by Conan O’Brien on March 15 at 8 p.m. CST and can be streamed on ABC and Hulu. Voting will begin on Feb. 26.
