Amid a sea of historic brick buildings, the beloved Campus Instructional Facility stands out in more ways than one. Opened in 2021 with five levels and over 120,000 square feet, the student-favorite building is sleek and modern.
Not only is the CIF architecturally attractive, but it also boasts sustainable features. Its energy-efficient smart windows change tint in response to the sun throughout the day, a contributing factor to the building’s net-zero operational carbon status. This is part of the University’s Illinois Climate Action Plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
However, to the average student, the CIF is where you gather with friends for late-night study sessions or sit on the monumental study steps to watch sports games on the giant TV.
The CIF’s facilities are impressive enough, but the view at sunset from its upper floors across the Bardeen Quadrangle is enough to brighten any day — no wonder it’s made its way into students’ hearts so quickly.
