The Main Quad is the grassy green heart of the University. At a whopping 203 feet wide and 940 feet long, it provides students with plenty of room to relax, socialize and enjoy a variety of recreational activities.
From Quad Day to Spring Jam, the Main Quad hosts major events that create invaluable memories for students and faculty alike.
Enclosed by eight major buildings, the Main Quad is often populated by students basking in the sun or rushing to get to their lectures. At its northern end lies the Illini Union, the iconic home for students since 1941. At its southern end lies Foellinger Auditorium, a jewel of the Main Quad and venue to many concerts, guest speakers and final exams.
While all of the quads on campus have their strengths — the Bardeen Quadrangle with its geese and creek and the South Quad with its peaceful demeanor — the Main Quad’s energy cannot be beat. That feeling of the first 70-degree day of spring, when it’s full of joyous students, is unmatched.
