Across from Lincoln Hall on Wright Street sits the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women’s University chapter house. The Illinois Zeta chapter was founded in 1895 and has recruited like-minded individuals at the University ever since.
Colloquially known as Pi Phi, the sorority prides itself on values like integrity, lifelong commitment and sincere friendship.
Pi Phi participates in philanthropic endeavors as a driving force of their chapter’s efforts. Their philanthropy focuses on decreasing childhood illiteracy nationwide, aiming to cultivate a love for reading through their Read > Lead > Achieve initiative.
The Illinois chapter of Pi Phi partakes in “Champions are Readers” every semester, a program designed to mentor young readers. Women from Pi Phi tutor children in grades K-8 one-on-one at the Dyslexic Institute of Central Illinois.
Notable alumni of the Illinois Zeta chapter of Pi Phi include Robin Baumgarten, news anchor for WGN Morning News, and Amelia Darling Alpiner Stern, the first president of the Illini Moms Association.
Students can look forward to joining a sisterhood in the fall and spring semesters, as Pi Phi is one of the many sororities that participate in formal and informal recruitment.
