Actor, woodworker, author, comedian and yes, even known as a mustache icon. Few Illini have built a legacy — or a canoe — quite like Nick Offerman himself.
Born in 1970, Offerman graduated from the College of Fine and Applied Arts with a bachelor’s in acting in 1993.
Offerman built a career for himself in acting after graduating from the University. In 2009, he was cast as Ron Swanson on “Parks and Recreation,” the role that launched him to fame. In 2024, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in “The Last of Us.”
Beyond acting, Offerman is a New York Times bestselling author of six books. He is also a skilled woodworker who runs his own shop.
True to his University roots, Offerman maintains strong ties with the campus. He returned as the 2017 commencement speaker, held book signings at Japan House and even donated a handcrafted gazebo to the cultural center.
Offerman doesn’t just play a man who loves steak and building things — he actually does. His mix of talent, authenticity and genuine love for his craft makes him the coolest University alum around.
