4 Valentine’s Day date destinations at UI

When you’re surrounded by little besides corn and cows, planning a date may feel like a daunting task. But with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you’ll need to think fast. Luckily, there are plenty of fun date spots right under your nose — you just need to get creative. Here are four date activities that are easily accessible on campus.

1) Dinner at Sakanaya

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, you can’t go wrong with a romantic dinner. Sakanaya is perfect for sushi lovers (a term open to interpretation). This restaurant has plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options, so it is optimal for those with dietary restrictions. With its dim lighting, elegant decor and sophisticated menu, things are sure to go swimmingly.

Sakanaya, located at 403 E Green St. in Champaign, offers a wide variety of sushi and authentic Japanese food. The restaurant also has an open viewing area for customers to watch their sushi being prepared.

2) Brunch at Caffe Bene

If it’s a first date, a casual cafe brunch could take the pressure off. Caffe Bene is perfect for this because it’s cute, cozy and low-key. There, you can order a coffee, a breakfast sandwich and a

sweet treat, or visit the make-your-own-ramen station. The fairy lights inside add a touch of romance, and both the drinks and your date will warm your heart.

Caffé Bene has two main locations on campus, Gregory street and Green street, where students can pick from a variety of coffees, bubble teas, ice cream, pastries and so much more.

3) Ice skating at the University of Illinois Ice Arena

Want to do something a little less predictable than going out to eat? Try ice skating at the University of Illinois Ice Arena. It’s romantic, fun and doesn’t require a reservation. On Valentine’s Day, public skate hours are from 1:30-4 p.m., and if you come wearing pink or red, you can rent ice skates for free! When in need of a break, skaters can also grab a beverage or

snack from the “Penalty Box.” Plus, students skate for free with their i-card — perfect for a couple on a budget.

4) Bowling at Illini Union Rec Room

The Illini Union not only has multiple study and food spots, but it also holds a campus bowling alley in the basement. The Underground also has multiple pool tables, games and a karaoke stage.

For a competitive couple, bowling makes for an exciting evening. Whether you’re a grade-A bowler or bumper-dependent, your date will surely be entertained. After a few rounds, if sparks are flying, you can keep the night going by utilizing the other attractions the Illini Union Rec Room has to offer. These include air hockey, pinball, a claw machine and pool tables.
