Bob the Drag Queen, or Christopher Caldwell, is coming to The Canopy Club to perform a comedy show from his HBO series and specials. Bob said he strives to connect with the student population and showcase not only his drag side but performer side as well.

Bob the Drag Queen is an American performer most notable for winning RuPaul’s Drag Race season eight. Now, Bob has taken on even more successful roles in his career as a stand-up comedian, starring in his unscripted HBO Series “We’re Here,” which also stars other famous queens Shangela and Eureka. However, this isn’t Bob’s first time working with HBO. He’s also produced two comedy specials that will be included in his performance Saturday night. 

Bob’s drag career and career as a stand-up comedian are intertwined together; Bob said he started drag to help with comedy.

“I started drag as a way to get noticed by the comedy clubs,” Bob said. “I worked at a comedy club Caroline’s in New York and eventually started going to the gay bars because they paid more. Lip syncs eventually came down the line.”

Bob said he was also interested in starting drag because he thought it looked fun seeing RuPaul on TV and wanted to get involved. Bob’s career really launched after winning Rupaul’s Drag Race, which opened up more doors for him in Hollywood. It is often the case that after years of dedication and background on RuPaul’s Drag Race that queens become very successful afterward.

Bob described the experience of winning as very affirming but also stressful; however, he said he enjoyed the experience on TV, as he was expected to write sketches and videos, act, costume change and more.

“I’ve been doing drag for about 13 years now, but now I’m working on higher profile things,” Bob said referring to his series, “We’re Here,” which has been renewed for a second season.

“We’re Here,” is an unscripted series that also acts like reality TV for the queens as they touch on serious topics, such as being in a family with someone who is gay or what’s like for those whose families are not accepting. Bob said the show helps advocate for LGBTQ+ people and encourages them to be themselves no matter what. 

Bob is not new to performing on college campuses, though. In the past, he’s been hired by two Christian colleges. He said knows what to expect since he has been invited to showcase his talents at multiple colleges and is confident to step onto The Canopy Club Stage.

Bob will be performing at The Canopy Club Saturday at 9:30 p.m. The event requires proof of full vaccination against COVID-19, and tickets are available on The Canopy Club’s website for $30.
