Valentine’s Day flicks: Top movie picks for time when romance, love is in the air
February 14, 2008
Penniless lovers can’t feast by candlelight or grind under strobe lights during a night on the town, but an empty wallet need not forecast a broken heart this Valentine’s Day. Destitute couples can still celebrate the merchandised night-of-love together by cuddling on the couch in the warm glow of their TV.
For romance on the cheap, a Blockbuster survey recommends these date-night rentals (listed with the couples and quotes that complete them):
“Casablanca” (1942) – Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, “We’ll always have Paris.”
“When Harry Met Sally” (1989) – Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, “I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
“Wedding Crashers” (2005) – Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams, “True love is your soul’s recognition of its counterpoint in another.”

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (2002) – John Corbett and Nia Vardalos, “Why do you love me? … Because I came alive when I met you.”
“Jerry Maguire” (1996) – Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger, “Shut up, just shut up. You had me at ‘hello'”
“There’s Something About Mary” (1998) – Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller, “When I was 16 I fell in love…”
“Bull Durham” (1988) – Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon, “I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.”
“The Wedding Singer” (1998) – Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, “I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad; Carry you around when your arthritis is bad; All I wanna do is grow old with you.
