The new year calls for new resolutions, a new state of mind and a brand new look. Yet as makeup specialists observe the year’s makeup trends, it seems a brand new look for many may not be very brand new after all.
“The natural look is in,” said Ulta Beauty representative Kyle Flynn. “Products like Bare Minerals and Pür Minerals are popular, because it’s more natural-looking.”
Flynn said the recent demand for mineral makeup is due to the popularity of a natural look and the belief that it is good for sensitive skin.
“People tend to not wash their makeup at night and break out, so they think they have sensitive skin. That’s why these more ‘natural’ products are so popular,” Flynn said.
Even though vibrant colors are still in style, it is now only because they accentuate a person’s natural beauty.

“Spring 2010 is all about fresh colors and spring colors,” said Amanda Herzberg, a Lancome representative. “Peaches and soft greens especially. This spring is all about subtle colors. The nude lip, bright eyes, and the natural glow.”
Herzberg said that even though the new natural look is very popular, bright pinks and self-tanners, which were also popular last year, are making a comeback this spring.
“We definitely see a lot of younger girls more attracted to M.A.C. products, especially the brighter colors,” said Maria Qazi, a Bare Essentials representative. “But we see the pastel colors and ‘pure’ look becoming especially popular.”
Qazi said that the recent trends vary by age groups, but gradually customers of all ages are at least experimenting with mineral makeup.
Makeup choices also depend on their price range, but Flynn said that Pür Minerals is a cheaper solution for clients who want mineral makeup in their price range.
According to Elle Magazine, the natural, pure look has already made it on the runway.
“I wanted a radiance that seems to come from within,” says Gordon Espinet, executive director for makeup artistry at M.A.C,
For Jason Wu’s Resort 2010 fashion show, Espinet focused on the glowing skin, bare eye makeup, and bright lips for the models. Espinet also used M.A.C’s Tinted Lip Conditioner SPF 15 for the models’ lips to add color without taking away from the blush or drawing too much attention to the lips.
Espinet’s makeup style also emphasized another trend for the 2010 spring season — matte makeup as opposed to glossy products. Matte products, such as the Melba and Pink Swoon powder blushes he used on the models’ cheeks, along with the M.A.C. Prime Skin Enhancer, create a more unfinished, soft and pure look.
Matte makeup, along with nude lip makeup, creates a natural glow that accentuates a person’s natural physical characteristics. While glossy products create a polished look that stands out, matte products decorate the face in a way that makes beauty appear simple and effortless.
With these trends leading off the season, a new outlook on beauty is beginning to emerge; perhaps beauty is not something that can be bought or surgically enhanced, but discovered in its natural state. Or, maybe it is simply the illusion of natural beauty that is the most mystifying.
