The mix of restaurants on Green Street, from Mexican to pizza to subs, is joined this school year by a new type of cuisine. Sliders Burgers and Belgian Fries opened on Aug. 31.
Of course, they offer burgers and fries, but their menu also includes items like the ultimate grilled cheese, hot dogs and veggie burgers.
Sliders is owned by Serve U Brands, the same company that owns Insomnia Cookies. David Lasus, Director of Operations for Sliders, understands what sets Sliders apart from other burger restaurants.
“The biggest thing is that our burgers are made fresh, with ground beef fresh patties that are made every day,” he said. “They are never frozen. We also have the 2-ounce burger and the 5-ounce as opposed to just a traditional 5-ounce burger.”
According to Lasus, the most popular student order would be “the tailgate,” which consists of six 2-ounce slider burgers. This order is popular because two or three people come in and they can share with their friends.

But that’s not the largest order Sliders offers.
“We even started selling a lot of “the knapsack” which is 12 sliders,” said Lasus. “We know that people order together. We deliver late night so a lot of people with their friends will say ‘let’s get a lot of burgers and split it.’”
Sliders’ burgers are not the only menu item made fresh daily.
“With the Belgian fries, again, those are made fresh from scratch,” Lasus said. “We actually peel the potatoes, cut them, dice them, and then fry them twice, which is a very unique process.”
University students are enjoying the freshness of Sliders’ fries. For Davita Lott, senior in AHS, the fries are a favorite menu item.
“The fries are really good, and they give you really big portions,” she said.
Dane Suarez, graduate student in music, likes that Sliders makes their Belgian fries fresh.
“I don’t know what that means, but we saw them and they actually fried them just here so that’s good,” he said.
Suarez ventured out of the traditional burger menu item and tried the ultimate grilled cheese.
“I got two kinds of cheese,” he said. “I got cheddar and jack on it, and some bacon. It’s good.”
Another unique feature of Sliders’ menu is the variety of sauces they offer.
“We want to offer the customer a variety of flavors to have with their fries,” said Lasus. “So we have a traditional fry sauce, honey mustard, ketchup, mayo, barbeque sauce, hot sauce, and then there’s a whole slew of other sauces that will be rotated in and out. Some of our sauces you won’t see on a daily basis, so that’s one of the things the customers will want to come and check out, the sauces we have on that particular day.”
For some customers, the variety of sauces adds to the fun factor when dining.
“I think it’s a great idea to bring out all the sauces because it’s more interesting and fun to eat,” said Hana Kwon, senior in Media.
Sliders extended their hours until 3 a.m. starting yesterday. With success the past few weeks, Lasus is pleased with how everything has gone so far and is looking forward to the future.
“We’ve been happy, the students of Illinois have welcomed us,” he said. “We are fairly certain that it’s going to continue.”
