Decorating a small, shared space can be a challenge. From picking the right colors to finding places to shop on a budget, the task can go from enjoyable to dreadful quicker than you can say the Greek alphabet.
With this in mind, The Daily Illini set out to find some of the best-decorated sorority rooms and asked the women what tips they have for others looking to spruce up their living space.
Mare Ejankowski, junior in Media and former Illini Media employee, lives in a single in her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. For her, the key to having a cute room is finding a motif and sticking with it and not being afraid to get creative.
Her favorite part of her room is her closet, because she put flowers on the door paneling using silk flowers from Hobby Lobby and 3M strips.
She also recommends shopping for decor at TJ Maxx. “It’s really cheap and you can find a lot of cute, unique things,” she said.

Amanda Wallis, sophomore in Education, and Kelly Brennan, sophomore in ACES, share a room in the Gamma Phi Beta house. Wallis and Brennan recommend using bright colors to lighten up a room that might be dull otherwise.
They added that it’s important to know where to draw the line.
“Don’t over do it — less is probably more,” Wallis said.
Erin Bernstein, junior in Education, lives in a quad in her sorority, Pi Beta Phi. Bernstein’s favorite part of the room is her bulletin board, which is full of photos of family and friends.
Bernstein said the most important thing to do when decorating a room is to coordinate colors.
“Our bulletin boards, curtains — everything matches,” she said.
