Gym attire has evolved from having simply a functional purpose to becoming a fashion as well. In today’s society the “look good, feel good, do better” motto plays a role now more than ever. Among all the myths and truths of proper workout gear there are certain factors that attribute to good exercise clothing to optimize your workout.
Layers on layers on layers? It is a common misconception that the more you wear the more fat you burn. Yes, individuals who cover themselves with mass clothing are sweating more, but the additional clothing only causes water weight loss, not burning fat. Layering clothes can in fact be very hazardous and may cause overheating or other harmful results.
Speaking of overheating — wear clothes that breathe! Look for items made of moisture-wicking fabrics, which allow your body to not be trapped by its own heat. This fabric may also save you the embarrassment of the drenched-in-sweat look. The synthetic of this fabric does not absorb moisture, and rather brings it to the surface instead of letting it collect on your skin. Because of this, it dries faster, hence the drier and more comfortable you are, the better you perform. Spandex, Lycra, Polyester, Capilene, Coolmax and Polartec are just some examples of water resistant fabrics.
In motivational means, when you look the part, you are more likely to work harder. It is in your favor to invest in quality exercise apparel, but outspending yourself is unnecessary. Branded active wear is at no means necessary for a good workout, but it is a useful incentive to gain confidence.
Although going to the gym is somewhat about your image, you shouldn’t spend as much time getting ready for your workout as you do to go out with friends. The gym scene is already a meat market, there is no need to dress yourself for attention. Dress for comfort, dress for flexibility — don’t dress to show off.
