Barren.
I can’t think of a better word to describe my bank account at the end of the semester. For many students, once December rolls around, money saved from summer paychecks has dwindled, money spent on late night food and ridiculous costumes has added up and depression has set in.
With a little less than three weeks left of the semester, it’s time to get creative. And stretching your last few dollars as far as possible isn’t as hard as it seems.
*Food*
When you want to save money on food, you might have to sacrifice some of your favorites. Yes, Papa Dels has a pretty good pizza. However, One World Pizza has great late-night specials. One large pizza is $6 and can account for at least three meals for that week.

Even though you might be more in the mood for Flat Top, head to Dos Reales, where you can get an entire dinner, plus left overs for tomorrow’s lunch, for under $5. All-you-can-eat chips and salsa are free and come as soon as you sit down.
When it comes to choosing groceries, try to find cheap foods that can be used in many ways. Eggs are great because they are inexpensive, don’t spoil quickly and can be used to make a seemingly infinite amount of meals. Pasta can also be dressed up with many different sauces while still keeping the meal affordable.
*Other necessities*
When you’re really desperate to save a buck, be resourceful. Running low on napkins? McDonald’s probably isn’t. (See what I’m getting at?)
I’m not encouraging you to steal — that’s a crime — but if you happen to be there for something from the dollar menu and you happen to take a few more napkins than you need at that moment …
*Utilities*
If you’re looking to save a few dollars on utilities, you have to get creative and be willing to sacrifice.
First of all, be conscientious about your electricity use. Turn off or unplug any appliances or electronics you’re not using. Don’t leave your laptop on and charging all day long. And don’t play video games all night long (maybe study for a final instead).
Furthermore, think about if you really need to be using the electronics. Is the television on just as background noise? Are you on your laptop because you’re bored? A few of my friends will even pregame by candlelight to save a buck or two.
You could also consider turning down your heat. While it may not be ideal to set the thermostat to somewhere in the upper 60s, you’ll definitely save on utilities by making your heater do less work. Personally, I think it’s more comfortable to pile on the layers and blankets anyway.
*Gifts*
Three words: Do it yourself. Even though they take more time, do-it-yourself projects are the best way to give a thoughtful gift and save money. There are thousands of DIY blogs online, so it’s easy to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list.
