Owner of Gabe’s Place Gabriel Omo-Osagie was pronounced dead last Saturday around 4 p.m., according to The News-Gazette.
Omo-Osagie “produced a firearm” during a fight with his wife, Stephanie Bond. He then shot her multiple times and killed himself.
The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and Champaign County Coroner’s Office could not be reached for comment as of press time.
The News-Gazette reported that Omo-Oasgie’s autopsy showed self-inflicted gunshot wounds. His wife is in fair condition at Carle Foundation Hospital as of Monday.
Some residents of the building at 202 E. John St. said they did not know that the owner of their building had died.

“I had no idea; this is news to me,” said Mostafa Mostafa, resident and graduate student at the University.
Mostafa said that he did not think the death would affect his lease contract or prompt any resident’s decision to move.
“I don’t think it matters because it’s the same apartment, and the same people will be working there,” Mostafa said.
Rachel Fusello, resident and junior in LAS, said that she does not think she has ever met the owner but is curious as to what happened.
Fusello said her lease is up in August and she does not think the death will affect it.
“I have never had to deal with the owner directly, so I don’t foresee any problems,” Fusello said.
Fusello added that she has never had any issues with her apartment and is planning to live in another building next year.
“I’m shocked,” said Dominick Ngantou, resident and senior in LAS. “I didn’t know him personally and I don’t know how it’s going to affect the building.”
Ngantou thinks that the owner’s death will take security on campus to a new level, but he doesn’t think he will be moving out unless there are any dramatic changes, such as the cost of rent or a change in rules.
“I don’t think it should affect us at all due to the fact that we signed a contract,” he added.
According to Esther Patt, the Coordinator of Tenant Union, the tenants and their leases will not be affected.
“The death of a rental property owner has no impact on leases with tenants. The owner’s heirs or estate become the landlord and have the same rights and responsibilities in relation to the tenants as the owner had before his death. Likewise, the tenants have the exact same rights and responsibilities as they had before his death,” said Patt.
Individuals from Gabe’s Place declined to comment.
