In the aftermath of the death of Kiwane Carrington, more than three hundred area citizens participated in a Community-Police Forum on March 15, 2010.
The responses were collected the city and are now available at http://ci.champaign.il.us/cpforum/.
The comments are 43 pages long and ask different questions, including: What does good police-community relations look like? What are police barriers to good police-community relations, and what steps can be taken to eliminate those barriers? What are community barriers to good police-community relations, and what steps can be taken to eliminate those barriers? What issues are youth facing, and what suggestions do you have for overcoming those issues? Suggestions take a variety of different directions from blaming the police to the schools, to peers to the parents. Many suggestions are made in order to stop black-white stereotypes.
Now, the Community Forum Working Group, will review the comments and develop a city-wide improvement plan.
