At the Illinois Marathon last weekend, members of the Illini Emergency Medical Services team, or EMS, volunteered to help ensure the safety of marathon, half marathon and 5K runners and spectators.
The student-organized and operated emergency medical organization responded to over 90 medical emergencies at the event.
According to a press release, the nature of illnesses varied from heat exhaustion and loss of consciousness to respiratory arrest.
Ten patients in critical condition were immediately transported to local area hospitals.
