The Champaign City Council unanimously approved the renovation of a building on Fifth and Park streets at its meeting Tuesday night.
But some Champaign residents expressed their concern for the preservation of a mural, painted by former Champaign resident Angela Rivers, located on the side of the structure.
“I just wanted to express my concern that that building is protected as one of the most historical places in Champaign,” said Brian Dolinar, a resident of Champaign.
But council members and other citizens said integrity of the area was a higher priority.
“It would be nice if this mural could be preserved, but it would be nicer if this building could improve that neighborhood,” said council member Tom Bruno.

Florence Ransom, a resident of Champaign, said her church is located just down the block from the building, and the renovation of the structure would help improve the area.
Dolinar also called the 30-day suspension of Champaign Police Officer Daniel Norbits for the death of Kiwane Carrington to the council’s attention. He said the suspension is not enough of a punishment for Norbits, and the idea of having the officer walk the streets of Champaign after that period does not settle with residents.
City Manager Steve Carter said no violations were made in the decision of the officer’s discipline sentence, and issues concerning the suspension decision should be directed to him.
