A new total of 80 salmonella cases have been reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health, or IDPH, sprouting from Subway restaurants in Illinois, according to Kelly Jacobek, spokesperson for IDPH.
Illnesses have been reported on the IDPH Website in 26 Illinois counties, including Champaign, Will, and DeKalb counties.
According to an IDPH press release, cases were reported between May 14 and May 25.
The specific type of salmonella is called Hvittingfoss, which is rare — only one or two cases are seen per year in Illinois, according to the press release.
Jacobek said the IDPH, local health departments and the Subway corporation are working together to help stop the outbreak. Subway restaurants have removed all lettuce, green peppers, onions and tomato products from its restaurants, which are suspected sources of Hvittingfoss. The IDPH continues to investigate Subway restaurants for all sources of salmonella, Jacobek said.

The IDPH urges anyone with gastrointestinal discomfort after eating at a Subway restaurant to seek medical attention, Jacobek said.
