Champaign Police Department arrested Chico Staples, resident of Urbana, yesterday, linking him to five different burglaries from donation cans around Champaign.
According to a press release from the police department, Staples was seen at Buffalo Wild Wings on June 14, located on Marketview Drive, by a restaurant employee. Police were first called to the scene around 2:15 PM when the employee noticed the donation can to be open as Staples fled the restaurant. The employee initially became suspicious of the burglar when he did not order any food.
Police arrested the man at his home in Urbana after receiving a lead identifying the man as Chico Staples. After further investigation, the police now believe Staples has stolen from donation cans at three different Circle K convenience stores and a Subway restaurant, all located in Champaign.
The donation cans were distributed by Salt and Light Ministries as part of its Can-less Food Drive to help collect money for low-income families.
