Officers in the Champaign Police Department’s Community Action Team, or CAT, arrested a 19-year-old man on Sunday at the 500 block of East Green Street for mob action and aggravated battery.
Officers responded to a fight around 2 a.m. that involved five to six males, three of which ran from the scene when police arrived, said Rene Dunn, assistant to the chief of police for community services. One man tried to evade the officers by blending into a bench that was occupied by other people but was later arrested.
Police do not know the reasons behind the altercation, Dunn said.
University Deputy Chief Jeff Christensen said the incident is still under investigation as to whether the man was tied to previous crime alerts.
CAT was created two months ago after the Champaign Police Department noticed an increase in battery and robbery reports, Dunn said. Compared to reports from this time last year, the Champaign Police Department saw increase in aggravated batteries by 10.1 percent, robberies by 73.9 percent and armed robberies by 27.3 percent. The total number of violent crimes has decreased by 0.08 percent, though.
