With the current economic state, the Urbana City Council will put a freeze on its own wages to set an example.
Along with that decision, a one-year contract renewal for the Local 1147 of the International Association of Fire Fighters will be approved at Monday’s regular meeting, instead of the usual three-year contracts.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees work contract will also be approved, which includes a wage freeze.
“The city is challenged financially this year,” said Dennis Roberts, Ward 1. “The hope is the economy will improve and we won’t be in quite the same financial situation [next year].”
A mayoral appointment will also take place tomorrow as Anthony Cobb, patrol division commander, replaces recently appointed Police Chief Patrick Connolly. “Cobb has been working with the city for many years and has a lot of experience,” Roberts said.
