CU Citizens for Peace and Justice will be dedicating their 7th annual Unity March on Oct. 9 to Kiwane Carrington. Carrington was a 15-year-old boy who was killed in 2009 during an altercation with Champaign police.
“The march titled “Sowing the Seeds of Empowerment” will begin at noon Oct. 9 at 906 W. Vine Street in Champaign,” said member Brian Dolinar. That is the address of the house where Carrington died. The group will then walk down Bradley Avenue to the Randolph Street Community Center.
Member Aaron Andrews said that when he spoke with Carrington’s sister, she was pleased that the community was honoring him.
Andrews said the group will plant two fruit trees at the center in honor of Carrington. The trees are symbolic of the inspiration Carrington has given to others to take control of their lives.
Prior to the march, there will be held a symposium titled “Other Deaths and Other Truths: Communitiies Confronting State Violence.” The event will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the Asian American Cultural Center, 1210 W. Nevada Street.
