Members of the Champaign community gathered together Friday to celebrate the life and legacy of one of America’s most influential civil rights leaders. The Tenth Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration featured the remarks of local religious, political, and athletic leaders who delivered the message “MOVE on the DREAM” to the audience that filled the Hilton Conference Center in Champaign.
Keynote speaker, Bob Love, basketball legend of the Chicago Bulls, spoke to the audience about his struggle with a speech impediment, and encouraged “young people” to take opportunities and follow their dreams.
“All they have to do is have a dream, and I always equate dreams with Martin Luther King Jr.,” Love said.
Among the moves was a declaration by an intergovernmental panel with members from Champaign, Urbana, and the University leadership that established January 14, 2011 of honoring the Reverend’s legacy.
“It’s a long standing event that involves all the government bodies here,” said Alan Nudo, who served on the committee that put the event on. “It’s a great tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.”
