As a result of a decision made earlier this month by the University’s Facilities and Services Department, the University’s Board of Trustees did not vote on the proposed wind turbine project at Thursday’s meeting on the Chicago campus.
The project, which would provide 1.5 megawatts of wind energy for campus facilities, would install three 40-foot wind turbines on the South Farms near Curtis Road.
Amy Allen, junior in Engineering and president of Students for Environmental Concerns, said that the project has been delayed for seven years. The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, the organization responsible for providing the University with the grant for the project, has already extended funding for the turbines three times.
“It’s clear that we have to have a signed contract because that would express the University’s intent to complete it,” Allen said. “We hope that they realize the importance of keeping the grant because that’s what makes the project possible.”
