Dennis Schmidt, Public Works director of Champaign, announced that the sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinances in the Campustown and Downtown areas of Champaign are in effect.
Due to the accumulations of snow on sidewalks that increased with snowfall Saturday morning, city ordinances require that sidewalks be cleared within 48 hours after notice is given by the Public Works Director.
Property owners in the districts are responsible for removing the snow from their sidewalks after at least two inches of pileup and after accumulations of ice or sleet.
If ice is not possible to remove, the owner must use salt, sand or other material to attempt to clear the sidewalk so it can remain accessible to the public.

If owners do not adhere to the ordinance, their sidewalk will be cleared and they will be billed for the service.
