Checking for a bus’ arrival time may be simpler – and more technologically advanced – in the near future.
Similar to the existing LED Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District stopwatch signs, twenty-two new kiosks incorporating not only LED screens but large LCD screens are to be installed by the end of this year. Each kiosk will show real-time departure of buses from each location based on GPS tracking, as well as provide additional information, such as the time and weather.
The on-going project began about four years ago with the installation of the kiosk on Lincoln Avenue across from the Lincoln Avenue Residence hall. Four more of these kiosks were finished last week on Goodwin Avenue and at the Student Dining and Residential Programs building (the Ikenberry dining hall), 301 E. Gregory Drive.
At some locations, the kiosks will replace the existing LED stopwatch signage, such as at Transit Plaza on Wright Street or at the Illini Union on Green Street.
“It’s been a long-time coming,” said Karl Gnadt, director of market development for MTD. “It’s a great service for the riders: the students and faculty/staff using the bus. We get very, very positive feedback on them, so we’re excited to have them out there.”

MTD will pay for the equipment and installation of the kiosks, while the University will provide the fiber to the kiosks.
