Carle Foundation Hospital is making additions to its campus. To inform the city of Urbana, a representative from Carle will be giving an update Monday night at the Urbana City Council meeting.
“At this point, (the update is) more of a courtesy than anything else since we approved their project a couple years ago,” said Charlie Smyth, Ward 1.
A new heart center is underway that will give them the ability to have single-patient rooms and other benefits, Smyth said. The project will cost over $200 million, he said.
The foundation is also still waiting on a circuit court case regarding whether it is worthy of a property tax exemption for being a charitable organization.
Currently, property tax money that the foundation owes the city is in escrow, Smyth said. On top of that, the new addition would add value to the hospital’s real estate holdings and impact those numbers.

“They’ve been — for some time — a regional health care clinic, and so I think it’s real important to distinguish … (that) they may be doing charitable work, but that charitable work should not be at the expense of Urbana taxpayers alone,” Smyth said.
Following the presentation, the committee-of-the-whole will convene to vote on three items that were previously recommended for approval Feb. 28. Those relate to a reallocation of funds and two resolutions regarding road resurfacing and the selection of internal engineers for Tax Increment Funding district development projects.
