Champaign City Council will decide whether they want to continue funding the CommUnity Matters program during their study session on Tuesday night.
CommUnity Matters is a partnership between the city, Champaign Park District, Unit 4 School District, Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club and United Way to address youth issues identified by residents and police officers in the Garden Hills neighborhood.
Since its creation in 2007, the model has expanded to Douglass Park, Bristol Park and Beardsley Park neighborhoods. CommUnity Matters wants to expand to include the city’s other targeted neighborhoods and provide activities and educational opportunities for at-risk youth.
Funding for the program is supported by a federal community development block grant, and the city budgeted about $300,000 during this fiscal year which ends July 1.
Before the meeting on Tuesday, the City of Champaign Township’s annual town hall meeting will take place. A presentation of the township budget will be up for discussion, as residents will be allowed to make their business-related comments to the township.
