Protests mark tax day
Local political groups recognized Tax Day 2011 through demonstrations Monday.
The Champaign County Tea Party held a rally at Westside Park in Champaign to speak their opinions against increased taxes and debt.
Nancy Johnson, a director of the Champaign County Tea Party, said the taxes are restricting business’ abilities to assist the workforce.
“We believe that empowering our businesses to create revenue is better than taxing,” Johnson said.
The Law Student Labor Action Coalition also came to the Westside Park with a counter-protest.

“Their facts are just wrong. They don’t know a lot about how tax really works,” said Samuel Kauffman, graduate student and student participant. “Their calls for tax cuts and at the same time balancing the budget is illogical.”
The rally was held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
