The ongoing improvements to University Avenue between Randolph Street and Chestnut Street will be shifting to the north side (westbound) portion of the street.
Phase I of the construction project, being carried out by Feutz Contractors, Inc. will likely draw to a close this week allowing for commencement of Phase II on Friday, July 15. This is well in advance of the contract incentive date for completion of Phase I by August 10.
While Phase I focused on the south side of the street, including curb and sidewalk renovation, Phase II will focus on the north. This change of phase will be accompanied by shifts in the traffic pattern, most notably lane closures that will run along the north side of the street.
This project is being carried out to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists alike through the replacement of aging traffic signals, lights, and sidewalks. Pedestrian crossings are also being renovated and bike lanes added.
The $2 million project addresses some of Downtown’s highest crash intersections (University Avenue at both Randolph Street and Neil Street). In addition, the city hopes it will serve to better connect areas north and south of University, including Downtown and campus.

Also of note is the implementation of the city’s first LED street lighting systems, which will be more energy efficient than those lights present before the renovation.
