Money that was previously reported as missing from the Salem Baptist Church’s Martin Luther King scholarship was not in fact stolen, according to its Board of Directors.
It was originally stated that only 31 of 37 collection baskets that were sent out during the church’s fundraiser Jan. 15 were returned; however, Rev. Claude Shelby, president of the Dr. Martin Luther King Advocacy for Justice Committee, said Monday that the six missing baskets had not been sent out for collection.
The committee has given over 200 scholarships to seniors graduating from Champaign-Urbana high schools, including Assistant Chief of Police Anthony Cobb of the Urbana Police Department.
Shelby said the fundraiser raised a comparable amount of money this year as it did last year.
