After weeks of organizing what could have been an important local government event on campus, the Illinois Student Senate-sponsored Champaign City Mayoral Debate between incumbent Mayor Jerry Schweighart and challenger Don Gerard has officially been canceled.
Last year, the Congressional Budget Office projected that 23 million Americans would still be uninsured even if President Barack Obama’s sweeping health care package takes effect. As of 2007, there were roughly 55,000 uninsured individuals in Champaign County alone — about 29 percent of the total number of residents — according to a report released by the Illinois Campaign for Better Health Care.
The Champaign City Council will vote Tuesday night on the relocation of Judah Christian School and the adoption of Champaign’s comprehensive plan. These two issues have been the main topic in the last two weeks’ study sessions.
Sections of Lincoln Avenue, Springfield Avenue and Park Street may undergo resurfacing and other improvements if approved by Urbana City Council next week. The project, which gained initial support at Monday’s regular meeting, would be funded by $650,000 of Motor Fuel Tax funds.
