While students are busy planning their night out, the Champaign Police Department is planning its next round of bar checks.

The Peace Corps released a list of colleges and universities producing the most volunteers in 2010 with the University of Illinois ranked 14th.

To commemorate the recent renovations the University YMCA’s 72-year-old building has undergone in the past several months, staff, community donors and local politicians held a grand reopening on Thursday with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Due to a break in weather conditions, the snow buildup on curbs - which is obstructing public parking - will be cleared tonight by Champaign Public Works crews.

Dennis Schmidt, Public Works director of Champaign, announced that the sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinances in the Campustown and Downtown areas of Champaign are in effect.

Despite seizing upon any opportunities this fiscal year to save money, city comptroller Ron Eldridge estimated a deficit of about $225,644 in a financial report given at the Urbana City Council’s regular meeting Monday night.

Champaign City Council will convene Tuesday night to appoint a new member to fill the vacant District 5 seat. The appointment was pushed back after its last scheduled meeting was cancelled due to the weather.
