The City of Champaign Public Works Department is taking steps to clear the area from the effects of the snowstorm, which began on Monday and is expected to last until Wednesday, according to a press release.

Twelve to 20 inches of snow is expected to hit Central Illinois by Wednesday in one of the biggest snowstorms of the season. Ice will accumulate to a quarter of an inch, and winds will gust to 35 mph in the afternoon and night. The National Weather Service has also issued a Winter Weather Advisory Monday morning that remains in effect throughout Tuesday.

As of 4:15 p.m. 106 people across Champaign County are still reporting power losses after Tuesday's storm, according to Ameren Illinois' website. Ameren serves over 85,000 Champaign County residents with electricity.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Central Illinois in effect from 3 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

An eastbound lane of Kirby Avenue in Champaign will be closed between Stratford and Scottsdale drives beginning Wednesday while a gas main is being repaired.
