Piland drops eavesdropping charges
October 1, 2004
The Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office dropped the eavesdropping charges against Martell Miller Sept. 23, said Champaign State’s Attorney John Piland.
Miller was charged with three counts of eavesdropping after recording Champaign and University police without their knowledge. His colleague, Patrick Thompson, was also charged with one count of eavesdropping, but the charge has not been dropped.
“I’m really glad that the charges are being dropped, but the charges are not being dropped against my partner and I feel that that’s showing that the Courthouse is still picking and choosing how they want to use the law,” Miller said in a phone interview.
“I feel that we need to really look at our courthouse and try to bring a change,” he said. “I think it’s really time for a change because I feel there is unfair justice going on.”
Piland said the charges were dropped after he received a written request from the Champaign Police Department.

“The police are and were the victims in the case and they’re in the best position to determine how they want the case handled,” Piland said.
