City council approved plans for new public library

By Eric Chima

The Champaign City Council approved plans for the city’s new public library Tuesday but voted not to pursue a certification of energy efficiency for the building.

The building will be three floors, including a full basement, and will have more than 120,000 square feet of space. It will be located on the corner of Healey and State streets.

The energy certification would have come from a governmental task force called LEEDS and was projected to cost between $50,500 and $73,500.

Though much of the costs would have been in the form of paperwork, LEEDS certification would also have involved using more environmentally friendly woods and recycling the materials from the old, demolished library.

Councilman Jim Green said the library did not need an official certification to be energy-efficient.

“I want first and foremost an energy-efficient library, but we have to trust our architects and construction manager for that,” Green said.
