Wednesday marks the official start of Asian American awareness month. This year’s theme is “Building on Our Achievements.” The Asian American Cultural Center, 1210 W. Nevada St., will be sponsoring and hosting every event. The first event of the month will be a lecture given by Minya Oh, of the New York radio station known as Hot 97. The event will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. and will focus on activism in the Asian American and hip-hop community. Also happening Wednesday is an open panel discussion from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The panel, made up of Asian American professors and scholars, will field questions about recent debates sparked by the portrayal of Asians in popular media. Photo I.D. technology introduced in Champaign Park District

As part of the Champaign Park District’s 2005-2015 strategic plan to strengthen fiscal management and improve customer service, all patrons will need to present a photo identification card to qualify for resident rates at pools, open gyms and drop-in programs. The card will not cost anything to patrons, but money can be stored on the card for use with park district programs and to purchase items at concession stands. However, if the card is stolen it is a $5 charge to replace it. To ensure the resident rate, cards will be required for Champaign and Urbana residents who reside within the boundary of the district. For more information, go to www.champaignparkdistrict. com.
