UIUC hosts International Week

On March 10-18, the Office of International Programs and Studies is hosting events throughout the Champaign-Urbana community to celebrate International Education Week. The week aims to further engage students, faculty and the community with global issues. Various programs that will be used to promote international education include the following:

The Rain Forest Visions art exhibition is now open at the Spurlock Museum. The exhibition features work of indigenous groups from the rain forests of Central and South America.

The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies is sponsoring a panel discussion entitled “The U.S. Media on China’s Economic Ascendance” on March 15 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

The International Outreach Coordinators Council is sponsoring an International Careers Workshop at 6:00 p.m. on March 15 at the Levis Faculty Center, 919 W. Illinois St.

ÿExhibit explores realism

The “Spectacles of the Real: Truth and Representation in Art and Literature” art exhibition is on view at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, 805 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Urbana. The exhibition features art by local, national and international artists. It explores philosophical realism and the idea of artistic truth. The exhibition runs through March 31 and is free and open to the public.

Krannert Center to host UI Symphony Orchestra

The UI Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Foellinger Great Hall at Krannert. UI Student Concerto Competition winner Yao-Tsu Lu will be playing the violin. The performance features Glinka’s Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F Minor. Tickets cost $2 for students.

Local restaurants participate in fundraiser

Four Urbana restaurants will participate in the third annual Share a Meal with Community Shares program Tuesday, March 14.

The Camelot Room at the Historic Lincoln Hotel, Milo’s Restaurant and Silvercreek will donate 30 percent of the evening’s total gross to Community Shares, which will allocate the funds to 74 nonprofit member organizations. Kennedy’s at Stone Creek, which will also donate 30 percent, will participate in the program during both lunch and dinner hours.

Diners can order anything from the regular menu. When they pay, customers are able to designate where they want part of the bill to be donated. The benefiting organizations include groups like the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network, the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center and Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities in Illinois.

“This is just a nice way to support nonprofits without having to listen to long speeches – and you get to choose what you eat,” said Mike Doyle, executive director of Community Shares of Illinois.

Luke Kennedy, owner and chef of Kennedy’s Restaurant, said that his restaurant participates in Share a Meal because “(Community Shares gets) the money to the people who need it.”
