Man charged with first-degree murder

The Champaign Police Department responded to a report of victim with gunshot wounds at the 200 block of West Tremont Street the night of April 20, according to a press release. Officers found three victims at the scene.

Charles E. Woodson, one of the victims found in a vehicle at the 300 block of West Tremont Street, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Champaign County Coroner.

The Champaign Police Department obtained a warrant for the arrest of Robert D. McCollum May 4 for charges of first degree murder and two counts of attempted first degree murder, with a $5 million bond.

Milwaukee Police Department arrested McCollum on the evening of May 5. McCollum is in Milwaukee County Jail awaiting extradition. No photograph of McCollum has been released at the time of the police report.

Lottery to decide order of parties appearing on ballot

Champaign County Clerk Mark Shelden announced that a lottery will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the County Clerk’s Office, 1776 E. Washington St., to determine in which order the major political parties will appear on the general election ballot held Nov. 7.

Opening ceremony for ‘world-class’ center for breast cancer

The University, Carle Foundation Hospital, Carle Clinic Association, and Linda and Doug Mills, who donated $10 million for the Mills Breast Cancer Institute, will hold a “groundbreaking” ceremony for the new center dedicated to breast cancer treatment and research 10 a.m. Tuesday in a tent located at the east side of the South Clinic.

The Institute will provide services by the Carle Clinic Association physicians and research in conjunction with the University. It will be built on the Carle Medical Campus in Urbana. Patients of the new center will also be at the ceremony.

Governor praises state’s actions against flu outbreak and terrorism

Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich today praised the state’s performance in a large-scale exercise that tested Illinois’ ability to respond to simultaneous major emergencies, saying the state’s commitment to preparedness, training, and development of special response capabilities enabled Illinois to successfully tackle the challenging scenarios.
