First Quad Day called success from start

A temporary cease-fire was declared on the war between students and administrators Friday on the Quad.

The first annual Quad Day was highlighted by a volleyball game pitting the Chancellor’s office against the Dean of Students’ staff, soul music and bongo drums resounding from the Black Affairs Center booth and a marathon concert featuring rock, folk, dixieland, soul and miscellaneous music.

“It was beautiful,” said Mark Herriott, one of the coordinators of the event. “I’d like to see it become an institution.”

And it probably will if the response continues to be as good as it was Friday.

Several thousand students turned out to stroll through the west side of the Quad, which was lined with booths manned by representatives of student organizations and administrative offices.

Students also demonstrated their physical prowess in games of volleyball or frisbee with members of the University Board of Trustees, representatives of the State Superintendent of Public Education or the Board of Higher Education.

Willard Broom, the other student coordinator for the event, said he was pleased with the results.

“You know it’s a success when you see the amount of interaction that was going on today, especially in the volleyball and frisbee games,” he said. “There was a good relaxed atmosphere so that people weren’t afraid to talk – to reach out and break down the barriers .”

He added that the Board of Trustees members who attended the event said they enjoyed meeting students other than the usual student government representatives.
