Fire marshals speak out on cooking fires

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is joining fire officials across the country to increase awareness of home cooking fire dangers during the national Fire Prevention Week, which runs through Oct. 14.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. State Fire Marshal Dave Foreman offers several safe cooking tips which are available on the Office of the State Fire Marshal Web site at www.state.il.us/osfm.

Director of YMCA to speak on United Nations

Tomorrow Rachael Dietkus, director of the University YMCA, will be speaking at the Channing-Murray Foundation, 1209 W. Oregon St. in Urbana.

She will be sharing her experiences about serving on the United Nations Human Rights Council after her 12 week stay in Geneva, Switzerland at the United Nations.

She had the experience of seeing how diplomacy unfolds in a time of crisis.

Attendance is free and open to the public, and the event will begin at 7 p.m.

Graduate program recruiters to talk at UI

The Masters of Public Policy and Masters of Public Administration recruiters from five of the nation’s elite public policy and management graduate programs will hold an information session for students on Oct. 17.

The graduate programs will include the Maxwell School of Public Affairs at Syracuse, the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, the Wilson School at Princeton, the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Columbia University and the JFK School at Harvard.

The session will take place at 4 p.m. at 329 Grainger Engineering Library, 1301 W. Springfield Ave.

Target donates money to Urbana Crisis Nursery

Target Corporation recently donated $1,000 to the Crisis Nursery, 1309 W. Hill St., in Urbana for its Parent-Child Interaction program.

The PCI program is designed to teach parents about their child’s development and how to encourage continued growth through support.

Target’s sponsorship of the program is part of Target’s ongoing support for local communities throughout the United States.
