The Urbana City Council has approved an ordinance amending the city’s liquor code allowing businesses to sell packaged liquors beyond beer and wine. This ordinance arises after a local convenience store was involuntarily annexed into the City. Following annexation, the business was only able to receive a liquor license to sell beer and wine, putting them at a competitive disadvantage.

Urbana City Attorney Jim Gitz, says this will not have a major affect on the community.

“Will it have any major impact on liquor sales in the city Urbana? No, it will not. Will it change the overall number of licenses in the city of Urbana? Well slightly in the sense of this one situation, but only by a factor of one.”

Urbana says this ordinance is simply a matter of equity.
