S.C. suspect faces more rape charges

CAMDEN, S.C. – A South Carolina man, suspected of holding a 14-year-old girl captive for more than a week in an underground bunker before she could send a text message to her mother for help, has been indicted on more rape charges.

Vinson Filyaw, 36, has been held on kidnapping and rape charges since he was arrested in September after eluding police with an elaborate system of underground hideouts, authorities said.

A Kershaw County grand jury indicted Filyaw on 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct earlier this month, one count for each day the girl was held, assistant prosecutor Ronald Moak said. Each count carries a sentence of up to 30 years, Moak said.

Police said the girl was in the roughly 8-foot-deep hole, which had been carved out of the side of a hill and covered with plywood, according to court documents.

The girl used her captor’s cell phone to send a text message, which included a vague description of where she was being held underground.

Investigators, using cell towers to determine a general location of the phone, found the girl Sept. 16 in the booby-trapped bunker in a thick, wooded area less than a mile from her home.

Filyaw was arrested a day later. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday to face additional criminal sexual conduct charges, Moak said.

A phone message and e-mail left for Filyaw’s attorney, Neil Riley, was not immediately returned to The Associated Press.

The bunker was destroyed about a week after the girl was rescued.
