Johnson hopes for NCAA bill hearing in Champaign
November 2, 2006
U.S. Representative Tim Johnson said today he wants to schedule a hearing for a bill (HR5289) that would limit the authority of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The bill limits the NCAA’s ability to impose sanctions on member institutions by reason of a team name, symbol, emblem and mascot. It would allow any college or university that is penalized for those reasons to sue the NCAA and seek a court order to stop the decision.
Johnson hopes the House Education and Workforce Committee can hold a congressional hearing in Champaign for the bill. The exact date has not been set and will not occur until after the midterm elections.
