Last night, the Urbana City Council approved a rental registration program intented to improve tenant by more extensive registration process and more frequent city inspections of rental units. Some Urbana residents spoke at the city council prior to the vote. They expressed their concerns that older historic homes would be in danger of being torn down if they did not meet newer, stricter standards. Still, other Urbana residents spoke in favor of tighter standards and landlords who may be renting out sub-standard housing.
