EIU computer stolen

By The Associated Press

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A computer containing Social Security numbers and other personal information for Eastern Illinois University’s 1,400 fraternity and sorority members has been stolen.

“So far, there is no evidence that any of the personal data has been misused,” university spokeswoman Vicki N. Shaw-Woodard said Monday.

The desktop computer and hard drives from two other computers were stolen from the Student Life Office on the Charleston campus late last week, according to a news release. Campus police are investigating.

The stolen computer, however, contained the Social Security numbers, birth dates and addresses for each member of Eastern Illinois’ 23 fraternities and sororities, according to the release. Data on past students had been purged from the computer.

The stolen hard drives contained only correspondence, according to the news release.

The school sent letters to the affected students notifying them of the theft.

Some Greek officers said they plan to discuss the theft with members of their organizations.

“There’s actually a lot of people concerned about it,” Toni Radzik, president of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, told the Mattoon Journal-Gazette. “A lot of people don’t know what we’re supposed to do. We don’t know what information was (taken).”
