Cities address flooding from melting snow
February 19, 2007
The City of Urbana Public Works department is once again busy in keeping the streets and sidewalks hazardous-free for pedestrians and vehicles. Only this time, they’re dealing with flooding. Now that the temperatures are rising and snow is melting, the Urbana Public Works department is pushing all the snow onto the curb, despite protests from residents.
“Sometimes we go through the neighborhood and push (snow) even further back,” Jim Kelly, Director of Urbana Public Works, said. “It’s necessary; the water has to go down the drain.”
They are using inloaders to remove snow from streets and corners inland because once night falls, the snow will freeze again, causing the roads to become hazardous once again.
The Champaign Public Works department could not be reached for comment.
