ISS elects new treasurer, passes measure urging snow removal

By Riley Roberts

On the heels of the abrupt resignation of Steven Benario, junior in Engineering and former treasurer of the Illinois Student Senate, delegates elected Senator Jose Paz, junior in Business, to serve out the remainder of the current term.

“I’ve been treasurer for two different organizations on campus,” Paz said in his brief speech before the election. “That experience, coupled with the fact that I’m studying accounting, makes me the best candidate for the job.”

It was discovered that several senators who participated in the election were ineligible to vote. Delegates initially debated whether Paz would have to resign or be removed from office in order to redo the election. In the end, however, the vote was simply redone and the result remained unchanged.

Also, there was a failed attempt to amend the agenda calling for the censure of former treasurer Steven Benario.

Colin Bishop, senior in LAS, wanted to introduce the measure, but there were not enough votes to include it on the agenda.

ISS delegates also discussed resolutions that will come up for action at future meetings, including one that would annually donate any ISS budget surplus to the General Scholarship Fund, maintained by the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid. That measure, as well as an appropriation and a resolution opposing the movement of student seating at Memorial Stadium, will come up for action at next week’s meeting.

There was only one item for action at the meeting. After some debate, a measure that urges the city councils of Champaign and Urbana to require snow removal by businesses passed.

It is unclear precisely what effect this resolution will have, but senators are hopeful that it may spur community leaders to action.

“As we all know, the sidewalks have been very difficult to get through,” said Ariel Avila, senior in Business, who introduced the measure.
