Destructive Urbana fire may have been intentional
March 14, 2007
Fire officials and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a fire that appeared to have been set intentionally Tuesday morning at an Urbana home.
The house, 2401 E. Elm St., suffered extensive damage but was unoccupied at the time because it was being renovated.
“It was pretty well gutted,” said Lt. Ed Ogle of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Department. Ogle said that damages to the house are being estimated between $75,000 and $80,000, but it appears that the foundation may be saved.
Details about how the fire was set are currently unavailable due to pending investiagtion. Ogle said the incident is believed to be linked to a break in the night before at the home. A small fire, which burnt itself out, was set on the second story of the home.
However, Ogle said currently there are no people of interest in custody and no leads as to who may have started this fire.
