Voter turnout doubles in local precincts
April 18, 2007
Ten precincts more than doubled their voter turnout in the April 17 elections from four years ago, Champaign County Clerk, Mark Shelden said.
Champaign 2nd precinct had 625 voters compared to 260 in 2003. Champaign 34th and 28th had doubled as well. Shelden attributed this increase to city council and school board races.
The largest increase was 226 percent in Mahomet 4. The four other Mahomet precincts had similar increases.
“There was a couple of hot referenda up there,” Shelden said. A liquor referendum and a referendum to implement a tax increase for a new library brought citizens to the polling booths, Shelden said.
Ballots were rushed out to precincts because of the underestimated number of voters. Mahomet 1st and Newcomb needed to wait a half an hour for their ballots to arrive.

“Everyone was real patient (and) real nice,” Shelden said.
There were power outages at some Mahomet and Urbana precincts, but Shelden said they did not greatly affect the voting process.
“I was really happy with how smoothly everything went,” Shelden said.
